Unity Partnership and Bridge 2 Aid

Afternoon all

I thought I would follow up an great blog post by Abi Al-Adhami from Abi Dental on the benefits of the Unity Partnership with Bridge 2 Aid.

I have always tried to follow one or two charities and over recent years have been the dental advisor for Action for Sick Children. I helped launch the dental playboy scheme which travels to socially deprived areas in the UK and helps young children understand the benefits of going to see the dentist.

As well as this I have always been interested in helping a charity abroad. I have previously helped with Dentaid and also Epiphany by supplying equipment. Ultimately I will go and volunteer my services but with 3 young children and 1 on the way I am needed at home at the moment so I have to find other ways to help.

Back in April the ever present (!) Chris Barrow, advertised the Unity Partnership with Bridge 2 Aid. Essentially a relatively small donation would help train a clinical officer, allowing them to treat emergencies in areas of Tanzania with little or no access to dental care. As an extra incentive Chris was also generously offering a bonus of free coaching services as an incentive to join up.

Abi outlines the business benefits of the Partnership including tax breaks, good publicity for you and some reassurance for your patients that their money doesn't all go towards fast cars!

At the time I was in the process of selling my share of a dental practice in Manchester and heading off into the big wide world after my first 10 years in dentistry.

The Unity Partnership and the opportunity to help train a clinical officer in Tanzania was the perfect way to celebrate this.

I was contacted by Mark Topley, Shaenna Loughnane and Brian Strotton who are part of the fantastic team at Bridge 2 Aid and straight away knew that I had made the right decision. The enthusiasm that exudes from them and the rest of the team is infectious and only makes you want to help more.

There were constant updates on how the clinical officers were progressing in their training, culminating in an email in September telling me that the clinical officer I had helped had passed!

Shadrack Magembe Malubalo would be working as a clinical officer in the Kahama district providing essential emergency dental care for locals that otherwise wouldn't be available.

Out of 12 students in this cohort, 11 passed, which is a great testament to the Bridge 2 Aid team and the dental volunteers who go out to help.

Well done Shadrack!

Receiving his certificate from one of the UK Dental Volunteers

I know times are tough at the moment for everyone both in the UK and abroad. The economy is uncertain and the fight for work is hard. But, there is always someone somewhere worse off.

I am not one for preaching the moral high ground, people who know me would agree that this would be a bit hypocritical (!),  but helping someone else ALWAYS feels better than helping yourself.

We are very lucky in the UK, those who want medical and dental help can usually get it in some form and usually within their local region. ( I know the exceptions and have read the Daily Mail so appreciate the NHS is not perfect!)

I am glad to have been able to give a small amount to Bridge 2 Aid that will help the people in the Kahama district in Tanzania from suffering too much with dental pain. One day I will get over there to congratulate Shadrack myself and help as a volunteer.

Maybe you could help too?

ADI Elections

Hi

I am happy to announce my support for Dr Richard Brookshaw who is standing for North West Representative in the ADI elections.
Richard has worked the length and breadth of the country in recent years promoting implant dentistry through his work and through his teaching with CADE.

I include his brief manifesto below:

Richard Brookshaw

Richard BrookshawI qualified as a dentist in 1996 from the University of Dundee and in 1999 I gained a Masters degree in Oral Surgery from the University of Sheffield. In 2001 I completed Sheffield University's pioneering 18 month Implant Programme. Over the last 10 years I have continued my education both in the UK and abroad. In 2009 I was awarded Highest Honours from the UCLA 1- year Implant Master program and a Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Dip Imp Dent RCS Ed). I continually promote the use of dental implants nationally and internationally through a series of lectures and mentoring programmes including performing as keynote speaker at Clinical Innovations, London 2008, lecturing on Nobel Biocare's World Tours and Nobel Biocare's Symposium, 2011. I'm the Director and Senior Surgeon at Same Day Smiles Ltd, a national network of dental implant clinics focussing particularly on All-on-4. I also offer implantology services and mentoring to a number of practices throughout the UK. I would like to share my passion for implant dentistry with the ADI. I believe I can promote ADI on a local and national level. I will strive to attract high-level speakers for local study clubs through my extensive personal network of contacts. Having been involved in training and mentoring a great many of the ADI members in the area, I will be aim to precisely deliver what you are looking for in the study clubs and to represent you accurately on the ADI committee. I believe in the fundamentals of the ADI and the advancement of education in implant dentistry. I will endeavour to promote these fundamentals through my involvement with the ADI and through my daily work routine. It would be a true honour to be able to serve the North West.

Implant Restorative Courses

Hi all,

Had a great meeting today with Nobel Biocare.

Exciting plans ahead for study clubs, the new Aesthetic Alliance (announced at the symposium) and for new implant restorative courses.

We discussed the need for all practitioners to have a working knowledge of implant dentistry whether it be from a restorative or a maintenance perspective. Dental implants are more common place than ever and we all need to know what to look for and how to troubleshoot and fix common problems.

We should all be offering implants as an alternative to dentures and fixed bridgework, thereby giving the patient informed consent of the treatments available.

To this end I am seeking practitioners looking to add simple implant restorative techniques to their repertoire. This can be new graduates who may have had limited exposure to implant dentistry or more seasoned dentists who would like to demystify implants. The course will include aspects such as simple screening and treatment planning to help refer suitable cases; single tooth and simple bridgework; denture attachments. This is not set in stone and can be adapted to delegate needs and wants.

There are plenty of year long surgical courses out there but few focusing on just the restorative aspect.

The courses are set to start early in the new year but I would love to hear from any early interest or any suggestions on how we can make this a very user friendly course.

Until next time

Andy

Strategic Alliances

Hi all,

I am happy to announce new alliances with some excellent practices in the North West.

I am now seeing new patients and taking referrals at:

St Anns Dental Clinic in Manchester -               www.stannsdental.co.uk
Oakley Dental in Prestwich, Manchester-         www.oakleydental.co.uk
Azure Dental in Formby, Merseyside-                 www.azuredental.co

These practices are private practices with a strong emphasis on patient care. They all have excellent teams and will be happy to assist you with any general dentistry enquiries as well as implant treatment.

I am looking forward to building a network of excellent practices to cover most of the North West.

If your dentist does not provide in house dental implants then please forward them to my website. There will be special gifts for any introductions that lead to a working alliance!

You can contact me through the practices above, through email info@andrewlegg.co.uk or my website www.andrewlegg.co.uk.

The new branding and website is in development and I am looking to launch in September/October so keep an eye out for that. There will be full social media interactivity, online referrals, member areas and a host of other features to help you get the most out of your treatment.

Bye for now!

Andrew

Dispatches

There are over 24,000 dentists working in the UK profession in over 10,000 practices.

Last night’s programme featured less than 6 practices and less than 10 dentists who allegedly were “gaming the system.”

If these allegations are true, we are as shocked and upset as you are.

Programmes like Despatches are there to expose the malpractice of all in the professions and business – bankers, politicians, business leaders, celebrities, healthcare professionals and others.

They do so in order to sell programming and advertising – so the more outrageous the better – if you dig deep enough you will always find a story.

We hope that watching the practices and individuals featured in the Despatches programme will have demonstrated the investment that we make in your dental practice, the care that we extend to our patients and the difference that we provide.

The truth about YOUR dentist is that we care.

EXCITING NEWS!!

Hi everyone,

It is with excitement, trepidation and some sadness that I write this post.

I will be leaving Glen Maye Dental Practice at the end of May after nearly 10 years!

I joined the practice in 2001 following my graduation from the University of Manchester and then in 2003 took over the patients of my esteemed colleagues Mr Alan Hopwood and Mr Scott Rimmer. At the time this was a daunting challenge but one I hope I have risen to over the last eight years.

I have been fortunate to build up a list of loyal patients, many of whom I would also consider friends and it has been a privilege to have been given the opportunity to look after their oral health. I will miss looking after an excellent group of patients but the time has come to move on.

As some of you will be aware I have been undertaking postgraduate training in dental implantology over the past 6 years and it is time to put that training into practice. Over the coming months I will be finishing my implant qualifications and focusing my career on this area of dentistry.

I have formed some alliances with dental practices in the North West and will be announcing those partnerships in due course. I am also fortunate to be involved with a new venture carrying out implant treatment in specific practices countrywide, more to follow with that one!

As well as some new ventures I continue to work at St Ann's Dental Clinic in Central Manchester carrying out implant and oral surgery.

Look out for more updates in the coming weeks and my new website to be launched in May/June.

Exciting times ahead.

Andy
